BACSA Resources

This page provides viewers with a number of downloadable resources that contain information that is the result of project managers' contribution to the field in which they work.

1. Microdot Technology - Technical Communique - Issued 3 June 2009

Fouche Burgers, BACSA Project Manager and Chairperson of the Microdot Standard Committee, highlights the benefits of the microdot technology as a tool which holds promise for the identification and recovery of stolen vehicles and parts in South Africa. The technology's benefits include its low-cost and tamper-proof resilience. However, for the full benefits of this technology to be derived, a much fuller take-up is required by manufacturers, the insurance industry, consumers and others. 3. Podcast Interview with Fouche Burgers and Precinct Web on the Profile of a Wanted Vehicle

Interview with Fouche Burgers, BACSA Project Manager, speaks with Precinct Web on the profile of a wanted vehicle, as well as the value of the microdotting of vehicles among other measures such as the fitment of tracking and anti-theft devices.

To gain a sense of the enormity of the business in vehicle crime, Fouche Burgers highlights that there are currently some 1.2 million stolen vehicles on our roads. Some 88,000 vehicles are stolen or hijacked in South Africa each year.

50% of these vehicles are recycled into the South African market. The identity of these vehicles are changed or cloned with relative ease, unless there other preventive measures which help to retain and identify the original identity of a vehicle (such as microdotting). 20% of stolen vehicles are chopped for parts and 30% cross our borders.

Only 43% of stolen vehicles are recovered in South Africa. Vehicles with tracking devices have much higher rates of recovery and as such as seen as a worthwhile investment.

Vehicles between the age of 7-21 years are at risk as there is an illicit market for these.

This interview is just over 16 minutes in duration.
