Business Against Crime South Africa remains deeply
concerned that the crime level in South Africa remains unacceptably high overall and is further
exacerbated by high levels of violence that threaten the feeling of safety and security that citizens
have in the country. The latest release of crime statistics by the Minister of Safety and Security do
show, however, that some gains are being made in reducing the level of many categories of serious
crimes.

Statistics, released 30 June, by the Minister of Safety and Security show that some gains are being made in
reducing the level of many categories of serious crimes.

Yesterday, an Anti-Crime Stakeholder Workshop was held by Government to mobilize stakeholders, including
organized labour, faith-based organizations, gender-based organizations, and civil society.
Business Against Crime South Africa applauds Deputy Minister Mluleki George for his open and frank
statements on the alarming levels of violent crime in the country. `The level of violence with which crimes are
currently perpetrated has reduced the public’s confidence in their own safety, he said.

reduction reflected in the budget speech delivered today. Business Against Crime South Africa concurs with the Minister
that intensifying the fight against crime requires more effective institutions and the appropriate mobilisation of resources.
In many instances capacity is a greater constraint than finance.
