BACSA Response to Budget Speech - 17 February 2010
Date: 17 February 2010
In the context of South Africa emerging from the first recession in 17 years, BACSA commends Minister Pravin Gordhan on his maiden Budget speech.
The emphasis within the speech on addressing the socio-economic challenge within the country, in particular putting the country on a path for economic growth and addressing youth unemployment, is commended.
Planned social infrastructure expenditures, alongside growth measures, help to give effect to a balanced budget which will also address some of the root causes of crime in the medium to longer term. This is an important contribution to the fight against crime.
Dr Wright, CEO of BACSA, says “The Treasury is commended for putting in place measures which will combat fraud and corruption in relation to tender and procurement processes. Greater efficiency in public spending will assist to prevent wastage, so that tax-payers money can be directed towards Government’s identified priorities, including crime.”
“The continued prioritisation of crime by Government as reflected by the budget allocations for the Public Order and Safety Departments in the order of R 85.6 billion is welcomed by BACSA. The identified targets for the police and the judicial processes, as well as the plans to strengthen the capacity of the Hawks is both needed and welcomed,” says Dr Wright.
BACSA once again urges all to work together and play their part in the fight against crime.
“Citizens refusing to do crime, to not buy stolen goods and to report criminal activities will help to make the country a safer place. BACSA on behalf of the business community remains committed to the fight against crime as a key partner of Government and as a catalyst for change.”
