The Shout campaign was launched today in Johannesburg.
This positive example of social mobilisation for a safer South Africa asks South Africans to take a stand against crime by downloading the remixed version of the Tears for Fears song: "SHOUT" and making a commitment to meaningfully contribute to a safer South Africa.
The interim Chairperson of the Shout Foundation introduced the thinking behind the campaign and introduced the audience to Danny K and Kabelo Mabalane who had mobilised artists from the music industry to become involved in the Shout production.
A star-studded line-up of celebrities galvanised by the murder of Lucky Dube, a celebrity victim of crime, agreed to participate free of charge (waiving their royalties and donating their time, expertise and creativity) to create awareness around crime through the Shout remix.
All proceeds from the download will be directed to the Shout Foundation to support anti-crime initiatives and the work of the law enforcement agencies and/or Criminal Justice System.
BACSA, recognising the positive initiative behind this social mobilisation campaign, has agreed to provide strategic advice to the Shout Foundation. BACSA is in no-way a beneficiary of the campaign. All proceeds from the campaign will be directed to worthy anti-crime initiatives at the final discretion of the Shout Foundation.
Reiterating the message of today's launch, BACSA urges all to take a proactive stance again crime by participating in the Shout campaign, by not buying stolen goods, by reporting crime and/or suspicious behaviour and by not doing crime.
We all have a role to play in building a safer South Africa, the celebrities involved in the campaign provide a positive example of responsible celebrity and concerned and engaged citizenship.
In the words of Yusuf Abramjee today: "It's time for us all to break the silence, and SHOUT out against criminals now…If you believe in the power of words, you will believe words can have more power than atom bombs ... Imagine then, the power we can harness as a nation, against crime and against criminals…if we not only speak out but if we – SHOUT…SHOUT…LET IT ALL OUT!"
