Mthethwa, General Bheki Cele, as well as the SAPS more generally for their proactivity and pragmatism in having put in place the gun amnesty process in an effort to rid the streets of a proliferation of illegal and legal firearms in South Africa.

Business Against Crime South Africa (BACSA) has urged all with redundant, unused and obsolete firearms to take advantage of the firearms amnesty, which is in effect until 11 April 2010.
BACSA, which fervently supports the firearms amnesty and responsible firearm ownership, emphasises the need for urgency, as, according to the SA Police Service, the process will not be extended beyond the 11 April deadline.
Firearms can be handed in at any police station.
